By having previously familiarized yourself with the fretboard, you should be able to ‘absorb’ scales into your guitar vocabulary, with little effort.

Just so you know, the scales that you learn in a regular six string guitar are exactly the same as those you would learn when doing bass guitar scales. The knowledge you gain when using the six string axe will come in handy even when playing a bass guitar.

1. There are two basic ‘must know’ guitar scales, and these are the minor guitar scales and the Major guitar scales. This is the foundation of everything else.

Even for pentatonic guitar scales, which by definition are five note scales (hence the ‘penta’ like in a pentagram or pentagon), you would be making use of a minor or Major element.

In fact, the minor scale is actually a Major scale, but starting off two steps backward. This is also known as the ‘aeolian’ mode. So ultimately, if you know just this one Major scale, you would also have the foundation by which to learn all else.

2. People are going to tell you that you have to learn “jazz guitar scales” or “metal guitar scales” but these are actually misleading, as both will still be derived from your knowledge of the basic scales.

A scale for heavy metal, for example, most likely uses a minor mode or a minor pentatonic.

And scales for jazz are so varied that an umbrella term ‘jazz’ is so inadequate in specifying what it is you want to do.

You could be doing a diminished pattern, or merely playing a minor arpeggiated iii chord, which are entirely different things.

Nonetheless, jazz will help you with improvisation guitar because you have to continually adjust your notes according to the underlying chords.

3. You may have read earlier that getting familiar with guitar theory is more important than guitar technique. Well, now you have to know how to build up chops like never before.

As a bass player, who uses wide fretboards, it is advised that you already practice on your bass, as opposed to a regular six string. You need to familiarize yourself with the feel of your instrument.

Even though a bass guitar usually does not have to play single notes in succession as though doing solos, you are inevitably going to have enough skills to showcase your talent.

4. To improve technique, the one tool you need is a metronome. No other device could accurately gauge and progressively raise your technical abilities as a device that ticks at a given tempo. Over time, you must be able to play along even at faster tempos.

Say you start at a tempo of only 80 beats per minute. You can begin with any one of many bass guitar scales from the first position, after which you slide to the second position, until you reach the very end of the fretboard, and you go down again in a similar fashion.

From 80 in one week, wherein you have allotted a certain time each day or every other day for practice, go up to 84 in the next week. Before you know it, in just a little more than half a year, you will be going at it at 200 beats per minute! Good luck.

Buying a used bass guitar can be a very wise move that would help you save hundreds of dollars otherwise spent on a brand new guitar. It doesn’t matter if you are looking for an acoustic version or an electric version; a used bass guitar is always cheaper than buying a new version. In these challenging economic times, buying a used bass guitar is always a smart move that would still give you the same pleasure as owning a new guitar without the heavy price tag.

But how do you make sure that you get a good and reliable used bass guitar? Where can you find these types of used versions of good quality used bass guitars for sale?

Here are some clues.

eBay

The eBay marketplace is a good place to head to if you are looking for a used bass guitar. eBay is a very safe marketplace if you deal with established eBay merchants that have plenty of good feedbacks. The system of letting others leave positive or negative feedbacks is very helpful to determine which sellers you would deal with and which should e avoided. It also offers buyer protection if purchases are made and paid through Pay Pal accounts.

Craigslist

Craigslist is another popular place to look for a used bass guitar. Craigslist is not as secured and protected as eBay is and you would need to use your own judgment when dealing with sellers. Be sure you know what you are getting into before you send money to anyone. Do not use a third party escrow you are not confident with either.

Forums

There are plenty of forums and message boards dedicated to lovers of bass guitar. You can join into these forums, become an active member and look out for any used items that are for sale. These are good places you can bargain to get a low price.

Classified Ads

Check out the classified ads in the local paper. You may even place your on classified ad looking for a used bas guitar. If the seller is located in the same town as you are, this would be a fortunate thing as you can touch and feel the item before you pay for it. Never send money to someone you don’t know and pay for a product you have not seen and touched if you are looking via classified ads.

If this is your first attempt at mastering the art of playing a bass guitar and are looking for a suitable guitar that would be perfect for you, the wide selection of choices around can be enough to stop you in your track and cause you to be overwhelmed.

You may be intrigued and yet a little lost at the endless variety and spectrum of choices there are which can help you become a better bass guitar player.

There are plenty of cheap beginner bass guitars but the problem with most of these is it often makes use of inferior hardware which would severely affect the quality of the sound you are getting.

Cheap hardware and shoddy workmanship is certainly something you can do without when you are starting out, it can cause you to lose interest and your motivation to dwindle fast if all you get from your new guitar is inferior quality sounds. Here are our top recommendations for beginner bass guitar that is easy on your pocket but deliver the quality sound you are after.

Beginner Bass Guitar #1: Yamaha RBX375

Yamaha is a well known name in the world of musical instruments has a long history of producing beautiful sounds from its range of musical devices. This beginner bass guitar is a wonderful example of how chap doesn’t have to be inferior.

It’s low in price and yet delivers the crisp quality smooth sound you would expect from much more expensive version. It has an alder body which is lightweight and a beautiful maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard.

Beginner Bass Guitar #2: Squier Standard Jazz

This bass guitar is a cheaper version of the more elaborate version of the classic fender jazz bass. The electronic doesn’t come across too good when compared to the Yamaha version but nevertheless it still deliver the Fender sound like music without the high fender price tag.

Beginner Bass Guitar #3 Epiphone Les Paul

This is the classic version that resembles the Gibson Les Paul guitars. It has a solid mahogany body and a maple neck with two hum bucking pick-ups. It is a heavy bass guitar and therefore you need not worry much about being extra careful with this version. It is durable enough to be carried anywhere without incurring damage to its parts of the body of the bass guitar.

Beginner Bass Guitar #4: Ibanez GSR200

This is a bass guitar that would be ideal for someone who is looking for individuality and a classy look. It is made from the Ataqis wood with maple neck and fingerboard.

Record is an attempt to sort this out by providing a program with on-screen features amateur musicians will recognise from a home studio (a mixing desk, effects racks and a sequencer window) that side-step some of the more head-scratching behind-the-scenes stuff. Anyone who has ever struggled with an audio recording program will appreciate the streamlined interface and the intuitive way in which Record works, although complete newcomers will find that there is still a lot to learn.

Record has three main screens: the Arrange window where individual tracks are recorded and edited, the Rack, which stores effects and software instruments, and a Mixer where users can balance the tracks to create a finished CD-quality song. The program comes with eight digital effects such as reverb, Line6 bass and electric guitar amplifier and speaker simulators, and a collection of basic software instruments including pianos, organs, basses, drums, synthesisers and strings.

Records editing features mean that mistakes can be corrected quickly, different takes can be combined into a single recording and even the tempo of an entire song can be changed so that less dextrous players can produce note-perfect playing. In addition, it also works with Propellerheads Reason, a popular and wide-ranging collection of instruments and effects.

We tested Record on a four-year-old computer with 2GB of memory and a rickety sound card, and after a few tweaks to remove the odd audio pop during playback everything worked fine. Owners of more modern PCs shouldnt have any problems.

Anyone who has used music software before will find Record admirably straightforward, but there were still too many hiccups for real beginners. Setting up audio and dealing with latency (the delay between playing a note and hearing it) was hard to fathom. The mixing desk was a joy to use once we got used to it but complicated at first.

Finally, while the £109 offer price for existing Reason owners is a snip, the full price of £255 will inevitably put newcomers off.
