Fretless Bass Guitar

You may be interested to know the difference between a fretted guitar and a fretless one. Fretless guitars are often seen in the hands of a professional guitar player.

Beginners often tend to go with a fretted guitar. Are you curious about the differences between these two versions and when you should select to buy a fretted guitar?

Fretless bass guitar is absent of the metal frets that are usually present up the neck of the bass. Fretless guitars are actually modified versions of fretted guitars that are made traditionally by guitar manufactures.

To create a fretles guitar, the frets are removed by a professional luthier or by the player himself. But there are some guitars that are custom made that do not come with frets.

Other elements are identical on a fretless and fretted guitar.
Fretless bass guitars can be played with a pick or without one, although it has become a custom for owners of fretless guitars to pay it without one.

The Fretless bass guitar is much more exciting even though it is more challenging to play than the fretted guitar. Its smooth fingerboard enables one to glide through easily and the only thing that determines the length of the string is the player’s own fingers.

With a fretted guitar, the fret acts as a deterrent to stop the string from vibrating further when plucked and this doesn’t happen with a fretless guitar. Therefore it leaves room for intonation errors if the players aren’t an expert at handling these fretless guitars.

Fretless bass guitars requires more finger pressure than a fretted one. The left hands fingers must be strong enough to create pressure to enable the string to hold it against the metal board.

But if you are playing notes with strange rhythms or ones that require you to move fast, then the fretted guitar works best.

The biggest difference between a fretted and fretless bass guitar lies in its tonal qualities. Fretless guitars have a smoother tone as it is manually intoned by the fingers.

The sound produced by a fretles guitar is the natural sound of string being plucked rather then the crisp tone of the fretted guitar.

The fretted guitar is more harmonic sounding than the fretless ones. But nothing beats the special sound and the ability to experiment and gain more control over your tones like a fretless guitar. If you are a seasoned guitar player you may be attracted to the freedom and adventure that a fretless bass guitar can offer.
