As most guitarists know, the Ibanez guitar, even if it is for classic or for bass, is always known for its crisp, warm tone. The name of the guitar itself has a rock star sound to it and most of their bass guitars are very comfortable to play with. If you are a bass player looking for a bass guitar, try looking for an Ibanez bass guitar and you are definitely not going to be disappointed.

Most beginners in the field of the bass playing should of course buy their own bass guitar to be able to learn the instrument. Choosing the right bass guitar should also be taken into consideration before purchasing one. So what is the difference between this particular brand and the other brands in the market?

As with all other branded guitar, the Ibanez bass guitar started since 1908 in Hoshino Shoten Bookstore Co., and it became Hoshino Gakki Company that started producing its own stringed instruments in 1935. Over the years, it became increasingly popular in the western part in the 1960s. And although the maker of the Ibanez guitars was actually a Spanish named Salvador Ibanez, Hoshino Gakki bought the brand name to an almost extinct guitar at that time.

The history of the Ibanez guitar is so long and colorful. The Ibanez bass guitar included many different types of guitars that different types of guitar lovers could use even today. The brand also survived a lawsuit in the early 1960s because of similarities with an American brand. That was probably one of the best things that happened to the Ibanez guitar since they were able to produce top quality guitars at an affordable price.

The great side of having an Ibanez brand of bass guitar is that it does not have any sharp edges and you can play the guitar as comfortably as you can while sitting or standing. The strings are loose so you do not have to force yourself that much to get a sound from it and your fingers will not tire from that much playing. Truly the Ibanez bass guitar is the best when it comes to helping beginners and also great for those intermediate bass players. You can expect that it has all the features and qualities you would want from a bass guitar. So if you are going for something with a good name under $300, go with Ibanez as other brands can get very expensive.

By having previously familiarized yourself with the fretboard, you should be able to ‘absorb’ scales into your guitar vocabulary, with little effort.

Just so you know, the scales that you learn in a regular six string guitar are exactly the same as those you would learn when doing bass guitar scales. The knowledge you gain when using the six string axe will come in handy even when playing a bass guitar.

1. There are two basic ‘must know’ guitar scales, and these are the minor guitar scales and the Major guitar scales. This is the foundation of everything else.

Even for pentatonic guitar scales, which by definition are five note scales (hence the ‘penta’ like in a pentagram or pentagon), you would be making use of a minor or Major element.

In fact, the minor scale is actually a Major scale, but starting off two steps backward. This is also known as the ‘aeolian’ mode. So ultimately, if you know just this one Major scale, you would also have the foundation by which to learn all else.

2. People are going to tell you that you have to learn “jazz guitar scales” or “metal guitar scales” but these are actually misleading, as both will still be derived from your knowledge of the basic scales.

A scale for heavy metal, for example, most likely uses a minor mode or a minor pentatonic.

And scales for jazz are so varied that an umbrella term ‘jazz’ is so inadequate in specifying what it is you want to do.

You could be doing a diminished pattern, or merely playing a minor arpeggiated iii chord, which are entirely different things.

Nonetheless, jazz will help you with improvisation guitar because you have to continually adjust your notes according to the underlying chords.

3. You may have read earlier that getting familiar with guitar theory is more important than guitar technique. Well, now you have to know how to build up chops like never before.

As a bass player, who uses wide fretboards, it is advised that you already practice on your bass, as opposed to a regular six string. You need to familiarize yourself with the feel of your instrument.

Even though a bass guitar usually does not have to play single notes in succession as though doing solos, you are inevitably going to have enough skills to showcase your talent.

4. To improve technique, the one tool you need is a metronome. No other device could accurately gauge and progressively raise your technical abilities as a device that ticks at a given tempo. Over time, you must be able to play along even at faster tempos.

Say you start at a tempo of only 80 beats per minute. You can begin with any one of many bass guitar scales from the first position, after which you slide to the second position, until you reach the very end of the fretboard, and you go down again in a similar fashion.

From 80 in one week, wherein you have allotted a certain time each day or every other day for practice, go up to 84 in the next week. Before you know it, in just a little more than half a year, you will be going at it at 200 beats per minute! Good luck.

After developing a certain proficiency, you are going to perhaps give a bass guitar lesson of your own. A great tool for bass guitar instruction is the use of tablature. There is much you can impart to students by the use of bass guitars tabs.

Many online bass guitar lessons are done with the use of tabs. In fact, there is so much information on bass playing out there that is put into tab form, that a good percentage of tab is done by novices who are getting songs like Blink 182’s ‘Adam’s Song’ bass tabs all wrong.

A rule of thumb is this. If you Google a random tab for a song, for your use or the use of your pupil’s, chances are it would be all wrong. This is why it helps to have a good ear to verify these tabs, or to learn a song yourself and put this into tabs.

1. For bass guitar, it may be insufficient to have just the frets and lines indicating what to play. After all, good technique must be inculcated early on. You could not expect one to play funk bass or something like a Flea bass solo if they didn’t know what to do with their right and left hands.

Slap bass may seem like an intuitive thing, until you hear bad attempts at it. Tabs must at the very least be supplemented by bass guitar videos, say on Youtube, to show how something is to be done right.

2. You should know how to go about writing tabs. Even if you are fairly capable of learning by ear, an inefficient manner of putting things down on paper could lead to a great loss of time.

3. It is advised for you to learn things by the passage. Let us say you are tabbing a song for your student to learn guitar arpeggios. You do not need to play and then pause and then write down the note, and then play-pause-write again.

It is much better to hear how a passage goes and the arrangement of say eight notes in succession, before putting this down either with a pen, or typed out in your computer.

After all, if you have learned sufficient musical theory and are familiar with arpeggio shapes, then you would be familiar with the notes being played and have the proper order of it in your head. This saves so much time, even hours of it.

4. After tabbing out something, it helps to do a ‘spell check.’ Review the entire piece or song, listening to it while reading your tabs. For fast passages, either slow down the tempo or use the pause function.

In reviewing what you did, you may notice some mistakes you have made. Another good thing about reviewing your work is that you are able to comprehend the work as a whole, and even find better and less awkward fingerings and positions for a certain part.

Even when you teach using bass guitar tabs, make sure your student’s horizons are expanded, teaching him listening methods and the proper theory for him to be able to learn tabbing as well.

Finding a cheap bass guitar can be a challenge for those who aren’t familiar with this task. It is important to find a cheap guitar but it is even more important that it delivers exactly what you are looking for-quality, crisp high quality sound and superior hardware that won’t jeopardize your effort to create good music from this piece of instrument.

It is best to look for certain qualities when you are out shopping so you can be sure that you are getting what you are looking for.

Read these seven rules to help you find the cheap bass guitar without sacrificing what you are looking for.

Rule #1: Price Tag

Expensive guitars don’t guarantee superior quality nor do lower priced items mean inferior products. Sometimes, even the lower priced items can really deliver superb performance so you may want to make sure before you pay for it.

Rule #2: Established Brands

It is always safer to go with the established brands than to go with one that is relatively new. Established brands tend to offer better quality products and you will be much more secured in your purchases especially if they offer warranty for the hardware.

Rule #3: Bargain

There are always good bargains to be found on auction sites and you can easily get access to great deals by browsing some of the most popular online auctions sites such as the eBay marketplace and Bidz.com

Rule #4: Used

Consider buying a used guitar if you want to look for substantial savings when buying a bass guitar. Buying a used item is a good way to ensure you get the best value for money.

Rule #5: Test

Always remember to test the guitar before you buy to make sure everything works out fine. Buying cheap guitar doesn’t mean you should settle for less than acceptable quality.

Rule #6: Guarantee

Check to see if the manufacturer offer some form of guarantee on your purchase. This form of guarantee can safeguard you against manufacturing defects or hardware malfunction during the duration of the warranty period.

Rule #7: Reviews

Check user reviews to see what others are saying about the product. You will get a very good idea of how things would turn out if you care to read reviews from past users.

Follow these seven rules to help you find a cheap bass guitar that will give you the best value for your money.

Yamaha is almost synonymous to either the best motorcycle or the best in musical instruments. And they are really the cream of the crop. The sleek designs, the materials used – who would not want to play Yamaha bass guitar on stage?

I have this friend who has always fantasized about becoming a rock star someday. So he took me with him to fulfill his dream. But it was not to audition in some major recording company – or even the minor ones. He just went to a music store and checked out their bass guitars.

It was all set in his mind. He said it was a Yamaha or nothing. First, he checked out the Yamaha RBX374. It looked sleek. He tried slinging it on him. The salesman said that it was built to take abuse from any experienced guitarist. My friend was really delighted to hear that. Even the color was good for him.

Then he moved to the next one which is the Yamaha RBX170 which is almost similar to the first one. He tried it and immediately fell in love with it. He was especially attracted to the maple neck with 24- fret rosewood fingerboard and chrome hardware.

Even the amount was worth it. He saved enough money to buy the piece. In fact, he saved a solid $200 for it and even had change to buy a book that would teach him how to play music with it. When I asked him why he had to buy the Yamaha bass guitar, he just smiled and told me that this was his first step towards stardom.

Well, it is true that to reach for your dreams, you have to take the first step. Yamaha bass guitars are made from the best materials you could ever dream of. The wood, the fret and everything you touch will make you want to play great music with every strum.

I believe he’s right. As I was growing up, I would often hear of stories from famous musicians of how they started to play and when. Isn’t there a Latino singer who claims that he could sing even before he could walk? And now he plays music to every woman’s delight. The Yamaha bass guitars guarantee the guitarist not only of quality guitars, but guarantees great music, too.

True Rock stars know that playing with Yamaha bass guitars will only result in success on stage. That is the very reason that most concert scenes are dominated by Yamaha pieces. It is very rare to see another brand of musical instrument played by famous musicians all over the world, and that is because Yamaha has earned the respect of most of its clients.

So like my friend, make your dream one step closer to becoming a reality. Get a Yamaha bass guitar and strum your dream closer – closer to actually make it a reality.

The sound of a good bass guitar depends on the brand that you have. But if you really want to make a statement with the sound of your bass guitar, play it together with other instruments that complement your bass guitar. Many conventional and online music stores offer bass guitar packages that include your groovy bass guitar, the piques, an amplifier, lead, or guitar strap.

In other bass guitar packages, they will also include some tutorial materials that will get you learning to play your first piece. You can choose from a wide selection of tutoring materials like a beginner’s book or a DVD that will guide you step by step. It is like buying an entire bass guitar package that will get you started and playing right out of the box.

It is suggested that if you will you use an amplifier for your bass guitar, start with a 10 Watts amplifier or amp. This way, you do not have to close your door because it usually comes with a headphone socket so you can practice by yourself and not disturb others who may want to sleep by the time you are just in the mood to play. Amps like these have the standard four knobs for the three tone knobs and the volume knob. Many amps in bass guitar packages have metal grills in front of the speakers that are not just protection but to also make them stylish.

The DVD tutorials will help you play along with bass riffs. They introduce to the world the 12-bar blues, funk music, finger exercises and basic slap techniques along with pop and rock songs. It will teach you how to fit into a groove and play solid bass lines. And since the DVD has no regional boundaries, you can bring it anywhere you want and learn wherever you are.

The good thing about bass guitar package is that it usually have low actions, but with nice sound and is played with ease. It weighs less than seven pounds and with the strap to help you carry the weight you will not even feel that you are carrying something. Most bass guitars usually extend about 114 centimeters with its 20 frets, two single coil pickups, one volume, one tone control and a colored scratch plate that make you look like and feel like a genuine rock star. Buying bass guitar packages is a sure winner.

The short scale bass guitar was made popular by guitar makers that wanted to offer a 30″ option for players with smaller hands or arm length. Typical long scale versions have a neck length between the nut and bridge of 34″, which is still the standard for electric bass guitars.

There are extra long scale bass guitars that have neck lengths up to 36″ and these provide higher sting tension, which gives a more defined tone on the lowest string. While some bass guitars have gone longer, some have also gone shorter offering bass guitars with 28″ scale necks, which are perfect for younger players with small hands.

A short scale bass guitar is popular with adult players, too. Many like them because they are lighter and offer the ability to play fast. The players that switch hit between guitarist and bassist find them especially user-friendly, because of the shorter neck. To understand why some prefer the shorter neck, it is important to understand scale length.

Scale length refers to the vibrating length of the string, which is determined by the distance between the nut and the bridge. With this in mind, the fret placements are a ratio based on the scale length, so there is more distance between frets on a long scale bass guitar versus less distance between frets on a short scale bass guitar. This makes it quicker and easier to play a short neck version.

Another difference in long scale and short scale models is the tonal quality. Because the scale length influences the tonal value due to the tension of the string at a certain pitch, the tonal quality on 5 string bass guitars is enhanced with a longer scale neck because it gives better sound to the lowest string. On short scale models, the G string will sing out and the tonal quality is perfectly acceptable.

When it comes to choosing the neck length on your bass guitar, the number of strings is an important consideration, besides the size of your hands and arm length. The neck on 5 and 6 string bass guitars is wider, so smaller hands should consider a 4 string bass and it is also the reason that many chose a short scale bass guitar over the longer, and 5 or 6 string models.

Paul McCartney of The Beatles played a short scale bass and it was a large part of the distinctive sound their music had. Some describe the shorter scale guitars as a “plinky” type of tonal quality, although it might be better described as clearer high notes than long scale bass guitars have, but the longer neck models offer better lower tonal qualities than a short neck does.

Because of the distance between frets on the long scale models, many bass guitarists prefer the short scale models on 4 string models because they can move much faster between frets and manipulate the neck easier. The longer necks and wider 5 and 6 string bass guitar necks demand quite a stretch for some guitarists, which feels uncomfortable or makes for awkward moves.

There are many different models of short scale bass guitars on the market and they still remain the most popular 4 string bass guitars for many performers and they are necessary for the younger students. Many manufacturers offer them in a variety of styles and shapes.

All About Guitars – Strings, Shape And Sound

`Still my guitar gently weeps` – if you have been as touched by this haunting Beatles number as countless others have been but are clueless about guitars per se; well, here is a quick run-through.

Guitars basically fall into two categories; acoustic and electrical. Acoustic guitars are the most traditional and the most commonly used guitars. Made of thin wood, these guitars are hollow and large and do not use any external amplification. Because these are hollow, when attached to any electronic devices, the acoustic signals in them get transferred to an amplifier. They are suitable for any type of music but suit the genre of country or folk music best. Acoustic guitars again come in different categories and each has its own characteristics. They are the classical, twelve-string, steel, bass and resonator guitars.

Classical guitars have strings made of nylon and they have wider necks in comparison to other guitars. These guitars are mostly used for classical music and ballads and the sounds emanating from them are warm and gentle. A classical guitar is excellent for playing the Flamenco as the full-bodied sounds emerging from the guitar complements that particular style of music very well. This guitar is also great for chord-plucking, running arpeggios and nail-strumming. Since these guitars have wide necks with short fingers, playing them can be quite challenging.

The twelve-string guitar is made up of twelve strings as opposed to the more common six strings which make up the majority of the guitars. The strings are so paired that each pair has the same note but with one of the string tuned at a higher octave. A semi-chorus type of effect is achieved with his arrangement of the strings.

The steel guitars are played in a horizontal manner by either keeping them on their stands or placing them across the knees of the player. The two main types of the steel guitars are the lap steel guitars and the pedal steel guitars.

Bass guitars may have strings ranging from four to six with the four string guitar being most commonly used. The strings of a bass guitar are long and thick and tuning the guitar can be quite a difficult job. This guitar brings out the bass of the rhythm and electric bass guitars are beginning to be more popular.

Resonator guitars were basically invented to increase the volume of the music of
1000
the traditional acoustic guitar. These guitars are made of metal, unlike the usual wood and are most popularly used in country music, bluegrass and the blues. They are also known as resophonic guitars.

Electric guitars are different from the acoustic ones in that require amplification for the music to be heard properly. Unlike the classical guitars, they have longer necks and solid or semi-hollow bodies. They have to be connected to amplifiers to increase the vibrations which are generated by playing upon these guitars. The strings of electric guitars are fine-tuned with the help of control knobs and these also produce a variety of tunes. Electric guitars are much easier to play as less force is required to press its strings and tuning is also comparatively simpler. These guitars are used to generate heart-thumping music and thus are ideally suited for rock, hip-hop, funk and rap music.

Archtop guitars are hollow or semi-solid and use thick steel strings and can be either electric or acoustic. Jazz music is prominently played on these guitars and they are characterized by their arch-like shape at the top.

So, all you wannabe Elvis Presleys or Beatles fans can now take their pick from these guitars and strum to their hearts` content!

Bass guitar creaks while tuning?

Occasionally while tuning my bass / doing an extreme bend I can hear a creaking sound? my friend says this has something to do with my guitar have a plastic nut instead of a bone / graphite one.

Is this true?

The stories are varied, sorted, and some, like all good steely yarns are mythical.

“Dude, I walked in to this ol’ fisherman’s shop and there, hanging on the wall was the bass, the bass that would be the first and last bass of the rest of my life!”

Some are practical.

“ActiveMusician was having a sale, I picked the first one I saw, it was like blue, I like like blue, and hey, like blue for $150 bucks who could like argue?”

OK, OK, so we would all hope that picking out your bass would land somewhere in between these two extremes, somewhat mythical with just a hint of practicality. Either way it would be nice to have a good story but let’s face it, you probably have a guitar player friend that wants you to join his band as the bass player. “How hard could it be to buy a bass guitar online?” he says. Well, the truth is, not very hard at all. Let’s read on.

How to Buy a Bass Guitar

First, let’s decide what it is you would like to do with your bass. Do you want to practice for 18 hours a day? Bring it home and be playing gigs within the week? (bad bass player joke withheld for editorial concerns). Hang it on a wall with a custom guitar hanger and never play it? Well, I would assume it’s somewhere in the middle. As a long time bass instructor, I would encourage you to practice 18 hours a day but hey, that’s just me. OK, 4 hours. 4 hours is OK? Then 5 hours – git back in there. I want 5 more hours before supper!

“OK, so my guitar player friend says I’m interested in the bass, how do I start looking? What do I look for? How much is this new interest gonna cost me?”

If you’re unsure if your new band is even going to last through next week, there’s a good crop of Squier basses for under $200, like the Squier Affinity P Bass, the Squier Affinity J Bass and the Squier MB-4. Very playable, solid sound, and very affordable. If you’ve already got next month’s show booked, then I would recommend a mid-level bass, something in the $500 dollar range. The Fender standard four string is the kind of bass that will give you a professional sound right out of the box. It has professional, quality-made pickups, and for those of you who live in the warm climates of the South or the cold un-forgiving winters of Canada (hey, I’m from Canada), the neck will stay fairly straight and won’t bow like a banana at the first sign of extreme weather. Fender has been building basses since the beginning of time and they’re always a safe bet for your first instrument.

Buy yourself a tuner! Let’s face it, playing the bass isn’t rocket science (at least initially) and you’ll be plucking out songs in no time and wanting to jam with that guitar player friend of yours. When the jam starts you’ll want to be ready to play so a tuner (especially for beginners) is essential in getting you up and playing quickly. It will also help to make sure you’re in tune with all those CDs you’re gonna want to jam with (during your 18 hour practice day). I’ve had much success with the Korg DT-3 Guitar and Bass Tuner, which I actually picked up from this very site (thank you very much). It’s sturdy, small, easy to use, and has nice large lights on it for old guys like me, and maybe you if this is some sort of mid-life crisis thing.

Next you want to get yourself a practice amp. In this area you want to think small, mighty, and preferably combo, which, for those that don’t know, is the speaker and amplifier in one easy to lift package. Most people make the mistake of getting something that isn’t loud enough, they truck it over to that same guitar player’s house, this time a drummer’s shown up (he convinced him too), and your bass parts (and yes, hopefully they’re parts) become a distorted mess. Bass is meant to be warm, fuzzy, like a furry animal that you love and feed until it gets really fat and everyone drops by to pinch its cheeks. For this we need something that will comfortably fit in our practice area and still be loud enough for the perennial cheek pinching.

I generally tell people that if you can get a bass amp over 100 watts, you’ll be safe. Behringer is making great combo amps these days and you can’t beat the price. Check out the Behringer Ultrabass BXL3000A – 300 watts, a large 15″ speaker and you won’t blow a disc when lifting it into the rehearsal space.

After a while, you’ll notice that the bass isn’t sounding, well, all that great anymore. What ever could be the problem? That problem is old strings. Now I have my particular favorites and like any of you know who have made it this far in the article I’m not going to sugarcoat it. Basically, I don’t understand steel strings at all – people say they last longer but I’m a nickel man and I’ll tell ya why. For any of you who have tried steel strings, you’ll notice that they feel like they have a sticky, dry kind of feel to them. For me, the fingers of my right hand feel as though they are literally sticking to the stings. For this reason, I recommend something like D’Addario EXP170SL Bass Strings. They are soft on your hands while you do dishes (OK, bad commercial reference for anyone over the age of 35) but really, they are silky smooth and they sound a lot brighter than steel!

Wanna know how to spot a Beginner? They’re the ones without the gig bag. That’s right, you know who you are. You’ve bought a bass and hey, the case is included! I say that’s fine for protecting your bass when you move cross-country, but for everyday use, get yourself a gig bag. You’ll look cooler and one arm won’t become suddenly longer than the other on the repeated trips over to said guitar players house. The Fender Deluxe Gig Bag is the obvious fit for your new Fender bass. Wear your bass in style! People will stare, point, and say, “hey, now there goes a real musician!”

OK, hopefully that helped a little. Now go and buy that bass, and tell them Chris Tarry sent ya! I’ll wait….. Got it? Good, now get in that practice room!

Acoustic Electric Guitars Review

Acoustic guitars aren’t just for folk or country music anymore. These days the word “unplugged” has become an adored description of a popular rock or pop song. Artists and bands such as “Ryan Cabrera” “Michelle Branch” and The “Goo Goo Dolls” have brought the acoustic electric guitars back into the realm of popular music.
It’s not uncommon to see a local cover band do an unplugged set in a performance. Even in a non-acoustic set of songs, a rhythm acoustic guitar in the background along with an electric guitar and bass can add presence and color to the sound of the group.
How much do I need to spend?
It used to be that a great sounding Acoustic Electric Guitar for performance with a good feel would cost you at least $1000. These days, you can grab a great acoustic electric guitar for under $500.
First, let’s define what is an “Acoustic Electric Guitar”. An acoustic electric guitar is a guitar that appears to be an acoustic guitar but it also has the option of plugging it into an amplifier or public audio system. They enable the guitarist to get that beautiful acoustic sound and have it amplified without having to place a microphone in front of the sound hole.
These types of acoustic electric guitars can sell for anywhere from close to $2000 US dollars to around $5000 US dollars. Some acoustic/electric guitars by companies such as “Martin” and “Taylor” can easily fetch $5000 or even well over. And they’re worth every penny in my opinion. But most of us don’t have that kind of money to spend on a musical instrument.
Fortunately, some companies such as “Ibanez” and “Washburn” make some decent quality acoustic electric guitars and offer them at a very reasonable price. These (and the more expensive ones) all have on board electronics in the form of an equalizer and volume controls. Many have not only the standard quarter inch high impedance output but also have a low impedance output like top quality microphones.
About Acoustic Amplifiers
Today, with the popularity of acoustic based music and solo performers, acoustic guitar amplifiers have become a common sight on the stage of the weekend band as well as some of the huge and famous acts. Most of them, have a dual purpose and also sport a microphone input that gives the amp the functionality of a public audio system so that you can have your guitar plugged in on the first channel of the amp and your vocal microphone plugged in on the second channel. Each channel has its own separate equalizer and the performer is able to select his or her settings as they wish.
Amplification Options

There’s no question that a decent acoustic amplifier is a great thing to own but do you really NEED one? If you’re intending on doing the solo thing and performing as a solo act in small lounges or coffee shops, I would say, “Yes, you DO need one”. But if you’re in a band and you have microphones plugged in and a decent speaker system (no less than a 15″ speaker and a horn for your highs) on each side of the band I would recommend that you put the purchase of an acoustic amp on hold for now. In the meantime, you can plug your acoustic guitar directly in the PA system. You can get a great sound too. Companies such as Boss and Digitech make on the floor control boxes that are especially made for acoustic guitars but if you can afford one of them, a simple $50 US dollar chorus effect pedal added to your acoustic guitar sound and give your instrument a very sweet sound coming through the sound system. The acoustic processors give you every possible effect that you could desire for your acoustic guitar and are great but can run from about $100 US dollars to around $300. By going with the PA system rather than the amp you can bring your amplification cost down to well less than $100 or if your sound system has on board sound effects or perhaps a multi effects processor, or if you would rather go with zero effects, you can wipe the amplification cost down to zero.
Take your time, shop around and be patient. There are a lot of great gems out there my guitar player friend. Do layaway, savings account or whatever but owning a quality Acoustic Electric Guitar is well within your budget!
