So you are about to buy your first bass guitar and you’re wondering where do I start, there are so many to choose from many different colours, shapes, sizes, fretted, frettless, four, five and six string, wow the choices are endless.
At this point there are a few things to consider.
Your budget
We will deal with two points here, if I were starting to play for the first time my budget would be between $100 and $400 for a starter bass guitar and I would buy a 4 string fretted as these would be easier to learn on. Once you have gotten to grips with a 4 string then move on to a 5 string and so on.
On line tutorials all use 4 string fretted bass guitars so it’s a whole lot easier to follow if you have the same, a good starter bass I would recommend is the Yamaha RBX170 its very comfortable for all sizes and has a very good sound the cost is reasonable at under $150
Even if your intention is to get a good deal online it is vital that you shop around and try the bass guitar you have in mind, play with it in a store and make sure it’s comfortable and gives off the right Sound, if you cannot play well yet get the shopkeeper to play the guitar for you or bring someone with you who can play.
Now that you have your bass guitar you are going to need an amp and a cable to plug into the amp from your guitar. Yet again at this stage you do not need the most expensive cable or amp, you just need one to hear your self play, I personally would go for a good all-round amp as I am not gigging and just learning so the need for a high gain amp is not there.
A good amp, speaker with closed back combo is all you need I would recommend the Fender Mustang I which is a really good amp to start on.
